The Research Grants Council’s current page announces 400 Hong Kong PhD Fellowships for 2027/28 across eight participating universities. Applicants should verify both the central fellowship schedule and the chosen university’s full-application deadline.
Who can apply?
Candidates seeking new full-time PhD admission are eligible regardless of country of origin. Selection considers academic performance, research potential, communication and leadership.
Funding and benefits
The page currently labels its stipend and travel allowance as 2026/27 figures. Those amounts should not be presented as confirmed 2027/28 rates. Consult the current application leaflet and university funding terms for the applicable package and any support after year three.
How to apply and important dates
Read the RGC application instructions, complete the initial fellowship stage and then the required university application using the fellowship reference. The initial application deadline is 1 December 2026 at 12:00 noon Hong Kong time. The participating universities list full-application deadlines that evening at 11:59 PM Hong Kong time. Submit the initial stage well before noon and then finish the university stage. See the official 2027/28 application schedule.
Documents and preparation
Prepare programme-specific research proposals, academic records, referee information and English evidence where required by the university.
Before you submit
Make a personal checklist from the official instructions. Check that your name matches your identity documents, that uploaded files are readable and that your referees have enough time. Save a copy of your submission and its confirmation. If the provider changes its announcement, follow its current instructions rather than an older listing.
Frequently asked question
Does the fellowship replace university admission?
No. Follow both the RGC and university processes. A central reference does not itself grant admission.
