Leiden University’s Excellence Scholarship supports outstanding applicants to eligible September-start master’s programmes. The current scholarship page lists 1 December 2026 as the deadline.
Who can apply?
Generally applicants must be non-EEA and non-EFTA. Certain Advanced LLM and International Relations and Diplomacy programmes have different nationality rules. Academic performance around the top 10% is an indication of competitiveness, not a requirement to supply a ranking certificate.
Funding and benefits
LExS is not full funding. Published tuition contributions are €10,000, €15,000, €17,500, €18,500 or €19,000. Recipients must arrange living expenses and any remaining fees themselves.
How to apply and important dates
First complete the online master’s admission application and any required application payment. In the scholarship section, select LExS and upload the requested motivation letter. Submit a separate scholarship application for each eligible programme.
Documents and preparation
The scholarship motivation letter must be a PDF of no more than 500 words. Admission documents depend on the programme. Check exclusions for Leiden Law School degrees before applying.
Before you submit
Make a personal checklist from the official instructions. Check that your name matches your identity documents, that uploaded files are readable and that your referees have enough time. Save a copy of your submission and its confirmation. If the provider changes its announcement, follow its current instructions rather than an older listing.
Frequently asked question
Does LExS cover my living expenses?
No. Budget for living costs and check the financial evidence needed for immigration.
